Senator reveals that President Tinubu discreetly moves around Abuja at night to personally assess the living conditions of Nigerians during the current economic challenges.

According to Senator Orji Kalu, President Bola Tinubu is fully conscious of the economic difficulties confronting Nigerians and is actively implementing deliberate measures to tackle them.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Kalu disclosed that Tinubu discreetly navigates through Abuja at night to personally assess the situation.

“The president is fully aware that Nigerians are experiencing hardship and hunger. As someone familiar with the streets, he understands their struggles deeply,” Kalu remarked.

Kalu also revealed that Tinubu sometimes drives around the capital with minimal security. “On some nights, the president uses his car to explore and understand what is happening in Abuja personally. He travels discreetly with one or two vehicles, observing events firsthand. He’s not a president who stays confined indoors.”

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria experienced a surge in inflation, reaching 32.7% in September 2024. The elimination of fuel subsidies and the decision to float the naira by Tinubu’s administration have notably raised the prices of essential goods, making them inaccessible for many citizens.

Nevertheless, Kalu stood by these policy changes as both daring and essential. “The moves were very courageous,” he remarked, pointing out that Nigeria isn’t alone in facing economic challenges. He linked some of the financial pressures to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The strain of COVID-19 remains,” Kalu noted. “It continues to impact the global economy.”

The senator recognized the difficult economic situation but stressed that it is not exclusive to Nigeria. “Let me be frank with you. I understand things are not as they should be,” Kalu conceded. “The economy has been challenging; the environment has been tough. However, this economic issue is occurring in many parts of the world.”

Despite the obstacles, Kalu conveyed his confidence in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and their initiatives to rejuvenate the economy. “They are working on economic reforms aimed at restoring it to its intended state,” he remarked.
