Hardship and Coup Calls: Abacha’s Ex-CSO Al-Mustapha Speaks Out
Al-Mustapha, former CSO under Abacha, declares that calls for a coup are unacceptable amid current economic hardship. Learn more about his statement.
The ex-Chief Security Officer of late General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, has commented on the recent demands for a military coup in Nigeria.
The calls were deemed a misguided focus by Al-Mustapha, who asserted that military intervention in Nigeria’s political matters was no longer viable due to the establishment of democracy in the country.
On Wednesday in Abuja, he imparted advice to coup plotters suggesting that they redirect their efforts toward investing in supporting military obedience to democratic principles.
He emphasized that military governance is currently out of vogue globally.
Despite being a retired Nigerian Army Major, intelligence officer, and politician, he did not support the parliamentary or presidential systems of government in Nigeria because they were incompatible with Nigeria’s historical background.
He declared that he had become a Democrat and would not condone any form of disobedience to democracy. He urged individuals advocating for a coup to abandon such plans and instead focus on strengthening the country’s democratic values.
Today, I am a politician by profession and as such, my perspective of this nation is democratic. Nigeria has been our investment and we continue to invest in it. Our research efforts are focused on promoting excellence in democracy within the country.
According to him, the world currently follows a distinct path of military subordination to democracy. However, he pointed out that our operational presidential system may be considered as an example of such democracy.
