Hamza Al-Mustapha emphasizes ongoing efforts to foster unity and development in Northern Nigeria, aiming to address pressing challenges and restore progress.

Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), who previously served as the Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha, a former Nigerian military head of state, has discussed plans to unify the North.

Al-Mustapha made this statement during a conversation with journalists at an event in Kaduna, held in honor of Sardauna Ahmadu Bello, the Premier of Northern Nigeria. The event was organized by the Rebuild AREWA Initiative for DEVELOPMENT (RAI4D).

The former Chief Security Officer to the late Abacha expressed that it would be a mistake to remain inactive and allow the North to deteriorate.

“It is preferable to endure some discomfort in order to realign our efforts towards achieving our goals, ultimately benefiting the country’s unity in the North.”

In the 19 Northern states, institutions are either nonexistent or weak. These deficiencies contribute to the social problems affecting the North.

Therefore, instead of seeking solutions by identifying the problems, we will continually witness a rise in crime rates, which is truly unfortunate.

“So, plainly put, we are advocating for healing processes. Beyond just calling for it, we’re actively involved in these efforts. We might express opinions that unsettle parts of the leadership—both young and old—but that doesn’t concern us,” he stated.

Al-Mustapha claimed that the current regional leaders lacked direction and were indifferent to their states.

Al-Mustapha conveyed his sympathy regarding the events of January 15th, 1966 and expressed concern for the situation faced by ordinary people in both Northern Nigeria and the country as a whole.
