Gunfire erupted outside the Israeli consulate in Munich, prompting a swift response from local authorities as they investigate the incident and ensure security.
Media reports indicate that on Thursday, there was a shooting outside the Israeli consulate in Munich, Germany. The perpetrator allegedly fired multiple shots before being fatally shot by police officers. Law enforcement have since cordoned off the city’s downtown area to investigate and secure the scene.
On Thursday, Munich authorities shared a series of updates regarding the location of an incident. They stated that it occurred in close proximity to both the Munich Documentation Center (a museum dedicated to highlighting the history of Nazi rule) as well as the Israeli consulate.
According to the authorities, officers shot and injured someone who appeared to be carrying a firearm as per one of their tweets.
The police provided further information in a following communication, stating that the individual involved was fatally wounded while exchanging gunfire. Reports indicate that he possessed an aged firearm with a long barrel.
As of now, there is no available information regarding the identity of the suspected shooter.
Police representatives stressed that there was no basis to suspect the existence of any other suspects at large.
As a result of the incident, central Munich was flooded with an extensive police presence complete with commando teams and helicopters. As traffic became congested in certain areas of the city due to this heightened security response.
According to one post on X, law enforcement officials are presently present at the location collecting proof and interviewing individuals who saw what happened.
There has been an online circulation of a video clip, supposedly containing the incident where multiple shots can be heard as witnessed.
The Munich Documentation Center was reportedly fired upon twice by the suspect, as per Süddeutsche Zeitung and Bild. Subsequently, police officers guarding the vicinity responded with gunfire of their own.
It was noted by the media that the shooting took place on the same day as the Munich terrorist attack, which occurred 52 years ago. The incident involved a number of Palestinian militants who murdered two Israeli athletes and held nine others hostage during the 1972 Olympic Games. A poorly executed police intervention resulted in fatalities among the hostages.
The Israeli broadcaster KAN has reported that the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed no one was injured in the incident.
The Israeli Consulate in Munich posted a message expressing gratitude to the German police for their management of the situation. The post also disclosed that on Thursday, the diplomatic mission was shut down as tribute to those who lost their lives during the terrorist attack in 1972.
According to the Israeli mission, this occurrence highlights the perilous nature of the rise in anti-Semitism.
