In a violent incident in Nnewi, gunmen attacked police officers, resulting in the death of one officer and raising concerns about security in the area.
On Friday, in Nnewi, Anambra State, a police van was targeted by gunmen who killed one of the law enforcement officers at an intersection.
According to sources, the occurrence took place around 9 am. It was reported that when the assailants were pushed back by law enforcement officials, they hurled a homemade explosive device at them.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed this through a press release issued by the police command in the state.
A manhunt operation on the gunmen has been ordered by CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, according to Ikenga.
He verified the incident of men being assaulted at a checkpoint located in Uruagu community’s Omata junction along Nnewi Oba road.
“The attackers will be unmasked and apprehended through the assistance of locals in the area, as part of an ongoing manhunt operation led by the Assistant Commissioner overseeing Nnewi Area Command,” he stated.
