A Correctional Service officer was killed in a gun attack on the Afokang Correctional Facility on Wednesday night in Calabar, Cross River State.
The attack was confirmed by Affanga Etim, a spokeswoman for the Correctional Service’s State Command.
On Thursday, Etim told reporters in Calabar that no prisoner escaped during the event.

He claimed, “When they arrived, they started fire on the security crew, who likewise fired back in kind. As a result, one Assistant Superintendent of Correction, or ASC, was killed.
Since the attackers didn’t get too close to the main facility, neither a prisoner fled nor was killed.
We are sending extra armed guards to the site right now, and things are under control.
Meanwhile, during the attack, stray bullets struck a woman and her six-year-old daughter.
As of the time this report was filed, it was learned that the State Comptroller was holding an important meeting with his management team regarding the jail attack.
