An armed attack on an army checkpoint along the Abia-Imo border has tragically resulted in the death of two soldiers, sparking increased security efforts in the area.

On Wednesday morning, gunmen launched an attack on a military checkpoint in Ekenobizi, situated at the border between Abia and Imo states within Umuopara, part of the Umuahia South Local Government Area.

According to reports, the attackers arrived at approximately 6:18 a.m. in a white Lexus SUV (model 350/400) and carried out an assault that led to the deaths of two soldiers.

An anonymous military source shared details of the incident but was unable to confirm the precise number of attackers involved.

In a press release on Wednesday, Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu from the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA confirmed an incident: “During the early hours of November 13, 2024, troops stationed at a checkpoint along Umuahia – Owerri Road in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State were attacked by the irredentist group Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, Eastern Security Network.”

During the attack, the brave troops successfully repelled the assault, causing the attackers to retreat in disarray with gunshot wounds. They abandoned a Sienna and a Lexus Jeep that were used in their advance. Unfortunately, during this firefight, two soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Joint Task Force urged residents of the South East, and especially those in Abia State, to provide reliable information that could assist in locating the attackers on the run and addressing criminal activities in the area.

The force reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding lives and property in accordance with global best practices and the established rules of engagement.
