Guinea’s newly unveiled draft constitution proposes a two-term limit for the country’s leaders, aiming to strengthen democratic governance and prevent prolonged power. The public release marks a significant step toward political reform in the nation.
On Monday morning, the National Transition Council made Guinea’s preliminary constitution accessible on the internet.
Expected to be voted on by year-end, the proposal is anticipated to lay a foundation for constitutional governance and democratic elections.
In the proposed constitution, a bicameral system comprising of both a National Assembly and Senate is suggested.

In addition, it comprises of forward-thinking measures outlined in the 2020 Constitution such as prohibiting capital punishment and female genital mutilation.
According to the draft, individuals who are arrested, detained or charged must be notified of the grounds for their arrest.
The presidency is also subject to a rigorous limit of two terms, with each term lasting five years.
General Mamady Doumbouya, who seized power through a coup in 2021, currently has an ambiguous status.
The absence of any mention in the draft constitution suggests that he may be permitted to stand for presidency despite being prohibited according to the transition charter.
