The Kano State Gubernatorial Election Petition Tribunal recently rendered a decision that has alarmed and disappointed a group known as the Coalition for Democratic Right.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, won the decision, while the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), lost.

The decision would bring in Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the APC as the legitimately elected governor of Kano State and remove Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s (NNPP) administration.

Imran Babayo, the Coalition’s Director of Strategic Communications, responded to the development by arguing that the verdict has raised major concerns about respecting the will of the people during a contentious electoral process and rape of democratic norms.

In a press release made available to journalists, Babayo claimed that “the democratic process is the cornerstone of our nation” and that it is essential to treat every citizen’s vote fairly.

“Any claims of wrongdoing or irregularities during elections must be carefully investigated and dealt with by a fair and unbiased legal system.

Justice and maintaining the rule of law are of the utmost concern to the Kano State Gubernatorial Election Petition Tribunal.

“We demand that everyone who has a stake in the outcome of the election, including the judges, the electoral commission, political parties, and the general public, act with the utmost impartiality, integrity, and obedience to the law.

“The credibility of our democratic institutions depends on their capacity to function impartially.

We urge the appeals court to carefully analyse the ruling of the Kano State Gubernatorial Election Petition Tribunal to ensure that it is fair and follows due process, especially given that all respondents have filed appeals and are currently waiting for a hearing.

“The general public must have faith in the electoral process, and this can only be done by being transparent, accountable, and dedicated to doing what is right.

“We further urge all political figures and groups to uphold the law and abstain from any conduct that can encourage violence or jeopardise the peace and stability of our magnificent country.

“In closing, we stress the importance of everyone involved carrying out their constitutional responsibilities with a strong sense of justice and a fear of God. When our democracy is based on the values of fairness, accountability, and transparency, it flourishes. We are still steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding these ideals and making sure that the public’s voice is acknowledged.
