President Bola Tinubu has received a plea to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a form of reciprocation.
Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s Special Counsel, has suggested that Tinubu should release Kanu in return for Odumegu Ojukwu’s release of Obafemi Awolowo in the 1960s. Awolowo had been convicted of treason in 1965 and was imprisoned in Calabar prison.
However, Ojukwu, the late Biafra warlord, released Awolowo from prison on August 3rd, 1966. Ejimakor emphasized that if Kanu is released, the excessive deployment of the Army in the Southeast would no longer be necessary.
He also criticized the unequal treatment of the Igbo people by the Nigerian government, highlighting the contrast between the heavy military presence in the Southeast and the greater insecurity in the North. Ejimakor called for the release of Kanu, stating that it is time for payback.
