Shehu Sani, a former federal legislator, called the governors’ resistance to an N60,000 minimum salary for civil personnel startling.

As far as Obasanjonews.com is aware, the Federal Government has offered N60,000 as the new minimum wage during the ongoing negotiations by the tripartite committee.

The organised Labour, however, quickly turned down the offer, claiming that the minimum wage should be more than N400,000.

The N60,000 minimum salary that the federal government had previously suggested was, nevertheless, rejected by the governors of the 36 states that make up the federation.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Director of Media and Public Affairs, Hajiya Halimah Salihu Ahmed, claimed in a statement on Friday that the N60,000 salary was unrealistic and that, if it were to be implemented, some states would have to borrow money in order to pay their employees’ salaries.

Sani, the senatorial district representative for Kaduna Central in the 8th legislature, was taken aback by their stance.

Sani stated on X, “It is shocking that governors oppose a minimum wage of N60,000 despite an unprecedented increase in federal allocation.”
