Governor urges residents to comply with building laws to ensure safety and order. Learn why adherence is essential for the community.
Babatunde Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State has expressed his concern over the neglect of building codes and stressed that adhering to these regulations by professionals would significantly reduce instances of collapsed buildings.
At the conference organized by Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Sanwo-Olu addressed “Professionalism across Board in the Built Environment.”
According to him, a significant obstacle is the failure of citizens to comply with building codes. This leads homeowners and developers to ignore regulations pertaining to construction practices. Although housing is essential, it’s crucial that constructions are built correctly in order for them to be safe, healthy, and sustainable over time.
Advocating the engagement of only professionals in building is crucial to enforce regulations that prevent poorly constructed buildings which can be harmful to wellbeing, illegal and haphazard.
Who should be involved in the construction industry? Professionals such as builders, architects, structural and civil engineers, geologists mechanical engineers and electrical engineers come to mind.
Abide by building regulations.

Engaging only these professionals will likely resolve 70% of building collapses. It is crucial to involve trained experts in the construction process within the state’s built environment.
The governor acknowledged that professional organizations play a significant role throughout the entire process, from designing and supervising to constructing and managing.
He added that professional organizations should register deserving candidates to encourage professionalism and eliminate unscrupulous practices within the construction industry. Furthermore, he urged their leaders to create a system for monitoring non-members while also implementing measures for disciplining members who fail to adhere to established professional standards.
According to Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of LASBCA, this engagement showcases the joint commitment towards establishing an avenue for stakeholders in building and construction to engage in discussions, exchange knowledge and promote collaboration.
