According to the Jigawa State Government, actions have been taken to stop the ongoing confrontation between farmers and herdsmen.
This was said on Wednesday by Governor Mallam Umar Namadi as he listed some of his accomplishments after 100 days in office.
According to him, the government established the Farmers-Herdsmen Security and Peace Committee to work towards a peaceful resolution of the ongoing confrontations between herdsmen and farmers, particularly in the local governments of Guri and KiriKasamma.
He described the committee’s membership as included the Miyatti Allah leadership, the farmers’ organisation, security organisations, and traditional and religious authorities.
The Committee, according to Governor Namadi of Jigawa State, was set up to maintain security and peace in Guri Local Government.
He said that all of the grazing areas were being improved, and that cattle trails were being well marked across the State.
“We are already working to improve the grazing reserves,” he declared.
He said that the State government had already taken action to address the issue by seizing any illegal farmlands that had been given to certain people by particular authorities.
“Some authorities have taken advantage during our transition to illegally allocate farmland, thereby causing problems between the farmers and ranchers,” he claimed.
The skirmishes between the two groups, notably in the Guri and Kirikasamma local government regions, are an annual occurrence, according to OBASANJO NEWS24, and they frequently result in fatalities and the loss of agricultural output.
