The 21 local council chairmen and council members have been instructed by the Kogi State Government to resign from their positions at the conclusion of their terms.
This was revealed in a statement released on Thursday by Barr. S.M. Ozigi Deedat, the state commissioner for chieftaincy affairs and local government.
In the event that the state government issues additional directions, Deedat instructed the impacted officials to transfer authority to the Directors of Local Government Administration in respective councils.

Today, December 14, 2023, marks the end of the elected chairman and council members’ terms under the Kogi State constitution. This suggests that each chairperson and council member would relinquish their positions in accordance with this and transfer control of the Local Governments.
The announcement stated, “As of today, Thursday, December 14, 2023, all 21 local government chairmen and 239 councillors in Kogi State are expected to vacate their offices following the expiration of their three-year tenure.”
On December 15, 2020, the chairman and council members took an oath of office.
Deedat wished the executive chairmen of the State’s 21 local government districts luck in their future undertakings and commended them on a job well done during their tenure.
He said, “I would like to congratulate the Executive Chairmen of the twenty-one (21) Local Government Areas in Kogi State on their successful conclusion of their term in office as the Executive Chairmen on behalf of the management and Staff of the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.”
