Gov. Sanwo-Olu Enacts Lagos Electricity Bill to Enhance Power Supply

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu officially enacts the Lagos Electricity Bill, marking a step toward improving electricity distribution and addressing power challenges across the state.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has formally enacted the Lagos Electricity Bill into law.

The signing ceremony took place at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, and was attended by the state’s deputy governor, Kadri Hamzat, members of the State Assembly, and members of the state executive council.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the House of Assembly for its prompt approval of the bill, emphasizing that it will significantly enhance the socio-economic conditions of the residents of Lagos State.

He remarked that the electricity bill has been in development for several years, and its enactment assures Lagosians of a reliable power supply.

Additionally, the state Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, indicated that the newly signed electricity law will introduce an additional power grid for Lagos State and eliminate power outages.

“There will now be consistent electricity supply. The Host Community Development Trust Fund will create opportunities for communities to establish power plants,” he stated.

Ogunleye highlighted that this governmental initiative represents a significant advancement, ensuring a continuous power supply throughout Lagos State.

The Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 embodies Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to resolving persistent issues within the energy sector.

This legislation aims to create a solid framework for economic development, promoting industrial growth, enhancing quality of life, ensuring energy equity, fostering economic prosperity, and supporting environmental sustainability.

Among its objectives, the law intends to establish a well-regulated, financially viable, and technically sound Lagos Electricity Market, ensuring that all citizens have access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity.

It also aims to promote a variety of energy sources, including renewable options, encourage energy efficiency, stimulate investment, foster competition and innovation within the electricity sector, and electrify underserved regions, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of Lagos State.
