Gov Sanwo-Olu speaks out against the IgboMustGo movement, condemning it as a divisive and reckless call that he does not support.

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has dissociated himself and his administration from the demand made by a group of Yoruba extremists that individuals of Igbo origin exit both Lagos state and other regions in South-West Nigeria which are considered as part of “Yorubaland”.

According to OBASANJONEWS24, a profile on the X microblogging site (previously known as Twitter) shared a message advocating for an extensive demonstration with the hashtag ” #IgboMustGo” starting from August 20th until August 30th in 2024.

On the X platform, a person recognized for making derogatory remarks and publishing anti-Igbo content advised Lagos State’s South-East natives to evacuate their territory.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a past presidential nominee for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed his concern about the current trend. He stated that such actions are alarming and contradict Nigeria’s national identity as a united country built on harmonious coexistence among its citizens.

In reference to the issue, the Governor of Lagos State denounced the appeal in a statement released by his advisor for Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile. He labeled it as irresponsible rhetoric that could breed disagreement and harm between communities. The governor emphasized that everyone from any ethnic tribe is welcome in Lagos State since it serves as an abode for all Nigerians indiscriminately.

The governor stated that the post was not just reckless and divisive, but also aimed at creating conflict between Yoruba people in the Southwest region and other tribes who have settled permanently in Lagos.

He urged the inhabitants of Lagos to prevent any individual or group from causing unrest in the area.

The governor urged security agencies to expeditiously scrutinize and apprehend the culprits responsible for the handle.

Residents were urged by Sanwo-Olu to disregard the aforementioned post and any similar ones, as he pledged a redoubling of efforts towards securing sustainable peace in the State.
