Governor Otu has announced that he will not be celebrating his birthday, citing the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians as the reason. He expressed solidarity with citizens during these tough times.
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has turned 65, but he expresses regret that the severe hardships facing the country prevent him from celebrating.
He made comments about his new age on a Sparkling FM Radio program that was monitored in Calabar, after being connected by the special adviser on media and publicity, Linus Obogo, along with Barrister Ekpenyong Akiba, the special adviser on general duties.
Otu expressed, “In good conscience, I can’t celebrate my birthday with the usual fanfare given the current hardships.”
“The country is experiencing significant hardship due to ongoing hyperinflation. Hosting a grand event would be insensitive, which is why it has been kept low-key.”
He thanked the people of the state for their prayers and well wishes.
The governor stated that his administration made a deliberate effort to positively affect the people.
I have held various positions in this country and consistently met expectations. I pledge to serve the people of Cross River State faithfully as their governor, with God’s grace, ensuring added value for all.
He announced that starting next year, he will conduct regular town hall meetings throughout the three senatorial districts in the state.
“It will allow people to communicate with me directly, asking any question without reservations and hearing my responses firsthand.”
