The decision was made a day after Microsoft announced it would let off 10,000 employees in the next few months, following similar actions taken by Twitter, Amazon, and Facebook owner Meta.

The parent company of Google, Alphabet, made a large-scale reorganization announcement on Friday, cutting nearly 12,000 jobs worldwide.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, wrote in an email to staff, “We’ve chosen to decrease our workforce by around 12,000 roles.” The reductions are in reaction to a changing “economic reality.”

The decision was made a day after Microsoft announced it would lay off 10,000 employees in the next few months, following similar actions by Twitter, Amazon, and Facebook owner Meta, as well as by the once-untouchable tech sector as a whole.

To make sure that our employees and their jobs are in line with our highest corporate priorities, we’ve conducted a thorough evaluation of all product areas and functions, Pichai wrote.

“The roles we’re getting rid of are a result of that review.”

“I take full responsibility for the choices that brought us here since it weighs deeply on me that these changes will have an impact on Googlers’ lives.”
