Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been chosen by the Commonwealth to head its Election Observation Mission for Pakistan’s upcoming general elections on February 8, 2024. Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2010 to 2015, will lead a team of professionals with diverse expertise to oversee and evaluate the electoral process.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland expressed gratitude to Jonathan for accepting the role and highlighted the significance of his leadership, knowledge, and insight in this mission.

The Observer Group, consisting of 13 members, is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on February 1, 2024, and will remain until the electoral process concludes.

The Commonwealth, also known as the Commonwealth of Nations, is an international organization comprising 56 member states, primarily former territories of the British Empire.

The Commonwealth Secretariat has released a statement announcing that a 13-member Observer Group will be arriving in Islamabad on February 1, 2024, and will remain in the country until the completion of the electoral process. Scotland expressed her gratitude towards the former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, for accepting the invitation to serve as the Chair of the election observer group.

The team of observers will assess the entire process and provide recommendations for strengthening the electoral system if necessary.

The Commonwealth Secretariat is prepared to assist Pakistan with implementing these recommendations if required. Scotland emphasized the importance of all stakeholders, including political parties and their supporters, contributing to a peaceful election in line with Commonwealth values.

Throughout their stay, members of the observer group will be stationed across the country.
