The Government House Roundabout, which was built by the administration of previous Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, has been demolished, according to the Kano State Government.
The monument honoring Kano’s Golden Jubilee was demolished on Wednesday, according to the secretary to the state government, Dr. Baffa Bichi, because it had the Christian emblem of a cross.
Baffa, a former executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at Bayero University in Kano, said it was completely inappropriate for a Christian symbol to be displayed in a public building in Kano, where the majority of the population is Muslim.
Speaking in Kano, Baffa stated the removal of the Christian cross from the Muhammadu Buhari interchange at Hotoro is also being planned. He also added that the wrecked roundabout was preventing free flow of traffic.
“The roundabout was blocking drivers’ views, and second, if you look at it with a drone camera, you can see that it has a massive cross-shaped design on top of it.
And the majority of Kano’s natives—99.9 or 100 percent—are Muslims. Therefore, it is prohibited to build something with a prominent cross inscription on it. It contradicts Islamic principles.
Our clerics informed us that if our beloved Prophet Muhammad noticed anything—no matter how small—with the cross written on it, he would make sure that it was destroyed.
“I can assure you that plans are under way to ensure that those symbols are removed from the bridge. Even the Muhammadu Buhari underpass in Hotoro has a similar design.”
Speaking further on the ongoing demolitions taking place throughout the state, Dr. Bichi claimed that previous administration officials had illegally bought the buildings.
He insisted that only those with legitimate evidence of ownership paperwork would receive compensation from the government.
“Anyone who is supporting the invasion of public spaces like schools, hospitals, and Eid sites is ill and requires medical care.
“If you trespassed on public property and the government took it back, there is no way you could make a claim for damages.
“All of the buildings we are demolishing were obtained unlawfully and distributed among former administration officials.
The money was never transferred into the government account, thus anyone seeking compensation should meet the person who sold them the homes.
“It is mandatory that such individuals would be compensated if government takes your property to build infrastructure for the masses, but that’s not the case here,” Baffa insisted.
The administration will equally collect both state-owned assets and property that was sold outside the state, according to the SSG.
