Cardinal John Onaiyekan has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to lead his administration with fairness toward all Nigerians, highlighting the divine responsibility that comes with leadership. During a public event, the esteemed cleric reminded the president that “God is watching” and encouraged him to focus on national unity and citizen welfare as top priorities.

Onaiyekan emphasized the need for inclusive governance, tackling socio-economic challenges, and promoting harmony among diverse communities. His message remains relevant as Nigeria faces ongoing issues impacting millions of its citizens.

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja, stated that even though a larger number of Nigerians voted against President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election, he still has an obligation to serve all citizens.

He suggested that Tinubu, who was then the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), should transition from campaigning to governing and ensure equal service across all regions of the country.

The esteemed cleric appeared as a guest on the Sunday episode of Inside Sources, hosted by Laolu Akande, a socio-political program aired on Channels Television.

Cardinal Onaiyekan cautioned Tinubu against leading a government that is divided, where political allies receive appointments and regions of the country that heavily supported him are favored with projects.

He stated, “There are Nigerians who did not cast their votes for the APC. While it’s true that the APC received the highest number of votes and thus has the right to govern, it should not be overlooked that millions of Nigerians did not support them.”

Regardless of what the rules state, the reality is that more people voted against Mr. President than for him.

“Even as a minority government, which is how I describe our current situation, you still have the responsibility to serve the people and do everything possible to ensure everyone receives their rightful due while governing effectively.”

“Divine Observation”

Cardinal Onaiyekan encouraged the President to make every effort in advancing the nation, reminding him that he would ultimately be accountable to God for his leadership.

Mr. President, it’s time to transition from campaign mode to governance mode. The elections are behind us, and your focus now needs to be on governing the entire nation of Nigeria and serving all its citizens.

Consequently, I don’t believe the practice of awarding high political offices to former political activists is the best way to advance the nation.

“Now that you (Tinubu) have been announced as the President of Nigeria, I believe it’s time for you to settle into that position. As a religious leader, I’d suggest that your appointment has God’s blessing. If it is God who placed you there, be aware that He is observing your actions and will hold you accountable for what you accomplish in this role,” he stated.
