Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the candidate for Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), announced on Sunday that he has conceded defeat in the presidential election conducted on Saturday, December 8, 2024.
Bawumia mentioned that he had contacted his opponent, John Mahama, to offer his congratulations.
In a public address from his residence just hours after the results started coming in, Bawumia recognized his opponent’s victory and expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for allowing him the opportunity to serve as Vice President and run as a presidential candidate.
“The people of Ghana have expressed their desire for change through their votes, and we humbly respect their decision,” he stated at a press conference.
Dr. Bawumia recognized the preliminary results from the party’s internal counting, which suggest a win for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama.
