Germany is set to donate 100,000 doses of mpox vaccine to help manage and contain the ongoing outbreak in Africa, aiming to support public health efforts across the continent.

On Monday, a government spokesperson declared that Germany will contribute to the containment of the Africa outbreak by donating 100,000 doses of mpox vaccine from its military reserves. The purpose behind this contribution is to promptly support and provide aid for affected nations.

The spokesperson noted that Germany would provide financial aid to the World Health Organization (WHO) via different means, in order to combat mpox and assist its African partners through the GAVI vaccine alliance.

The German military is currently in possession of approximately 117,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine that were obtained during the year 2022 and are being stored.

As per a spokesperson from the defense ministry, some of this stock will be reserved to safeguard officials during foreign trips. The decision regarding restocking it will be taken independently, he further stated.

Due to its rapid transmission, the WHO has declared mpox a global public health emergency after it spread from an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to neighboring countries. Concerns have been raised over Clade Ib – a new strain of virus involved.

A spokesperson from the foreign ministry stated that Germany is striving to hasten vaccine distribution primarily in regions hit hardest by COVID-19 such as DRC, Burundi and other East African countries.
