General Yohanna Kure (rtd), the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army’s 82 Armour Division in Enugu and the 2 Mechanised Division in Ibadan, has passed away.
After a lengthy illness, Kure, who was also the Director of Army Special Duties and Plans, passed away in Kaduna at the age of 84.

His spouse, siblings, several children, grandchildren, and other relatives survive him.
On December 1, 2023, General Kure will be laid to rest in his hometown of Kurmin Musa, in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
At ECWA Church, Lemu Road, Tudun Wada Kaduna, by 4 p.m. on November 29, 2023, there will be a wake and a service of songs.
He was born on April 2, 1939, in Kurmin Musa, Kachia LGA, Kaduna State, into the royal dynasty of Mallam Manchaik Kure and Mallama Tawok Kure.
After completing his elementary schooling in Missionary Schools in Kwoi and Kagoro, he was accepted into the Provincial Secondary School Zaria, also known as Alhudahuda.
Through the esteemed Nigerian Military Training College (now NDA), Young Kure joined in the Nigerian Army in 1963 and received his officer commission in 1964.
Career
The late General Kure served in the Nigerian Supreme Military Council from 1983 to 1985 under President Buhari’s military rule, and he was a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council from 1985 to 1987, when Ibrahim Babangida’s administration began.
He was named Minister of Sports and Youth Development and Minister of Culture and Social Welfare in 1990 after he voluntarily retired.
Because of his strict self-control, discipline, and regimentation, he has had an amazing career profile since then and quickly rose to fame.
In 1964, he embarked on his first expedition to Australia, where he attended the Cadet Development Course, Command and Staff College Jaji, and several other local and international officer trainings. These culminated in the Strategic College, NIPPS, where he trained individuals such as his close friend, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, IBB.
He also had a strong experience in military appointments. He served as the Commanding Officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion in 1966, the Captain and Commanding Officer of the 22nd Infantry Battalion in 1967, and the Major and Commanding Officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion in 1968.
In 1974, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Subsequently, he held the positions of GOC 82 Division Enugu from 1983 to 1985 and GOC 2 Division Ibadan from 1985 to 1987.
Kure left the Nigerian Army in 1990 as an officer. After leaving the service, he studied at ECWA Theological College in Jos, where he earned a master’s degree in theology and a first degree in ministry.
