The five governors who oppose Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s continuing to serve as the People’s Democratic Party’s national chairman will congregate in Lagos on Sunday (today) for strategic consultation.
Olabode George, a former national vice chairman of the party, revealed this on Saturday.
He said that the gathering will provide the committee with the chance to assess recent party developments before making its next move.
The group will debate Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, according to our correspondent’s information, despite the topic for the meeting not being known at the time of publication.
Ayu and other party members received a vote of confidence from the National Executive Committee in September.
Wike had four other governors on his side when he grew irate with the conclusion of the party’s presidential primaries in May 2022, where he finished as Atiku’s first runner-up.
The four governors are Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.
Ayu had to leave, which the governors have emphasized at several meetings.
Even though some party members said that only a northerner could succeed Ayu, they have been at odds with Atiku because they feel that he did not do enough to persuade Ayu to resign so that a southerner could take his place.
In September, the five governors withdrew from the PDP Presidential Council.
Since then, the council has continued its campaigning while maintaining that the PCC was not easily sidetracked.
When Dele Momodu, the PDP Presidential Campaign Council’s director of strategic communications, was recently quoted as saying that Atiku lacked the power to force Ayu to resign, George responded that the group’s stance, which also includes former governors of the states of Cross River, Plateau, and Ondo in the person of Donald Duke, Jonah Jang, and Olusegun Mimiko, as well as ex-Information Minister Prof. Jerry Gana, among others, would be
He disregarded the assertion that Momodu made the remark, pointing out that the seasoned journalist had only recently joined the PDP and was thus unqualified to talk on the subject of party equity.
