Nigeria dominated the 2023 CAF Women’s Awards shortlist, which included Super Falcons goalie Chiamaka Nnadozie and midfielder Asisat Oshoala.
The Super Falcons and their coach, Wandy Waldrum, were on the shortlist of nominees, which was revealed by the continent’s governing body on Tuesday afternoon.
Oshoala, who plays with Barcelona Femeni, is in contention to win the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award for a record-breaking sixth time. With the Spanish powerhouses, Oshoala won the triple crown, which included the Champions League. She currently holds the record, having surpassed her fellow countrywoman Perpetua Nkwocha’s record with her fifth gong. In 2023, she received another nomination for the Ballon d’Or.

In addition to Oshoala, other Nigerians nominated for Player of the Year are Nnadozie, Christy Ucheibe, Osinachi Ohale, Toni Payne, and Uchenna Kanu.
Waldrum was nominated for Coach of the Year, and goalkeeper Nnadozie was nominated for Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year.
Other Nigerians Deborah Abiodun, Esther Ajakaye, and Oluwatosin Demehin were also nominated for Young Player of the Year.
Super Falcons are also vying for Team of the Year after a heroic showing at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Victor Osimhen is expected to become the first Nigerian winner of the prize since 1999. He was nominated earlier this year in the male category.
