Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has made the decision to cancel the 10,000 jobs in the State Civil Service that were previously approved by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Governor Fubara stated that a new recruitment process will be conducted to ensure fairness and transparency.

Before leaving office, Wike had authorized the immediate employment of numerous youths to fill the vacant positions in the state’s civil service. This move was aimed at addressing the workforce shortages promptly.

However, Governor Fubara, during a stakeholder meeting in Port Harcourt on Friday, disclosed that the recruitment had been cancelled due to significant flaws and compromises in the process carried out by Wike’s administration.

Fubara expressed his disappointment upon discovering that the selection of candidates from the 23 local government areas had been heavily influenced by political favoritism. He assured the stakeholders that a more equitable process would be implemented soon.

When questioned about the job cancellations, Fubara explained, “After reviewing the submitted names, it became evident that a majority, approximately 60%, were over-aged and had been chosen based on political connections. Our focus is on sustainable employment for the future. It is not practical to hire someone at the age of 52 for civil service, considering the impending retirement age.”

Fubara emphasized his administration’s commitment to maintaining a strong social contract with the people of Rivers State, ensuring transparent and effective governance. He also urged the Rivers State Waste Management Agency to intensify their efforts in keeping the city clean.

Represented by Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Fubara delivered this directive while receiving members of the RIWAMA Service Providers Association during their visit to the Government House in Port Harcourt.
