Fubara faces isolation without regional backing, sparking criticism against Southern leaders, while Northern leaders successfully pressured Tinubu to retract a tax bill. Dive into the unfolding political divide.
Dele Momodu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticized Southern leaders for not supporting Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.
According to PlatinumPost, Governor Fubara and his former political leader, Nyesom Wike, are engaged in a conflict over the control of Rivers State’s political structure.
The political turmoil in the major oil-producing state has resulted in the emergence of two competing House of Assembly factions, one supporting Wike and the other backing Fubara. The situation intensified on Wednesday when a Federal High Court issued an order halting federal allocations to the Rivers State Government.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Friday, Momodu from Edo State voiced disappointment over the South-South leaders’ silence concerning the crisis in response to these developments.
Momodu highlighted the difference by noting that, in contrast to this silence, northern leaders had recently taken action. He mentioned they successfully urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to withdraw a proposed tax reform bill that was considered unfavorable.
He expressed: “The lack of response from South-South political leaders regarding the current turmoil in Rivers State is quite disconcerting. One must commend Northerners; they consistently unite over issues that impact them collectively. Just last week, despite their political and religious differences, they came together firmly to oppose a proposed tax bill deemed harmful to their shared interests.”
Soon, President Bola Tinubu and his team backed down. Our Southern leaders are neglecting Governor Sim Fubara, seemingly unaware that they might face a similar situation if the Federal Government succeeds with this overreach… It’s only a matter of time!
