The Rivers State House of Assembly has decided to overrule Governor Sim Fubara’s decision to not sign four bills that the lawmakers have enacted.
The Rivers State Local Government Amendment Law 2023, the Rivers State Funds Management and Financial Autonomy Law 2023, the Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State-Owned Property Prohibition Repeal Law 2024, and the Traditional Rulers Amendment Law 2024 are among the laws.
After certain members loyal to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike moved to impeach Fubara, they cast their deciding votes.
This came after Wike and the governor got into a heated argument over who owned the political institutions and resources in Rivers State.
In a show of support for Wike during the height of the crisis, a few state legislators switched to the All Progressives Congress, or APC.
But President Bola Tinubu stepped in and forced Wike and Fubara to sign an agreement for peace in Abuja.
