The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, expressed his dissatisfaction with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that the party had disappointed him and his supporters in the state.
Governor Fubara, who was elected on the PDP platform a year ago, conveyed this sentiment during a meeting with members of the Senate Committee on Privatisation, led by Senator Orji Kalu, at the government house in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. Senator Abba Moro, a former Minister of Interior and a prominent figure within the PDP, was also present at the meeting.
Fubara humorously informed the Benue politician that he would not strictly follow party guidelines, emphasizing that the party had let down the state. He mentioned that he and his supporters in Rivers State were now functioning as a movement to uphold democracy, rather than as members of a political party.
Additionally, he addressed the political turmoil in the state. This stance was taken by the governor in response to an explosive incident that occurred in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, where an unidentified individual attempted to detonate an explosive at the Presidential Hotel, a renowned hospitality establishment in the state. The individual was subsequently apprehended by the police.
Governor Fubara highlighted that the failed attacker had aimed to target the facility hosting distinguished individuals, including members of the Senate committee, in order to advocate for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.
The governor of Rivers State expressed his concern about the apparent lack of action from the law in dealing with offenders, as it seemed that someone was exerting influence over the legal process. He also highlighted that there had been no instances of tenure elongation for former local government chairmen i
n any part of the country. Fubara made it clear that he was not engaging in a fight with anyone, but rather defending the state against predators and safeguarding the interests of Rivers State supporters against those who believe they have control over others’ lives.
