After a young guy died during a traffic stop, unrest broke out in a suburb of Paris.
Police announced on Tuesday that twenty persons had been detained for rioting in Nanterre, a western suburb of Paris. After a 17-year-old man was slain by an officer during a traffic check, rioting broke out.
The altercation happened early on Tuesday. Police said that the young man tried to ram an officer with his automobile and disobeyed a command before being shot.
Two policemen stopped a yellow Mercedes AMG, according to video taken by a witness. A second cop stood next to the first and pointed a firearm at the driver as the first stood outside the window issuing directions to the driver.
The officer fired a single shot after the automobile abruptly accelerated. Despite attempts to revive the driver when the Mercedes struck a pole, he passed away.
The driver has a history of defying police orders during traffic stops, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Around fifty individuals staged a demonstration outside the police station in Nanterre hours after the event, according to BFM TV. In other areas of the neighborhood, rioters torched several cars, destroyed bus stops, and lit trash cans on fire.
The shooting is the subject of an investigation, according to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin. On suspicion of trying to harm a police officer, a separate investigation has been opened.
