Emmanuel Gregoire, the first deputy mayor of Paris, noted that the bedbug outbreak is “truly a national emergency.” The official went on to say that, as the nation gears up to host the Olympics in 2024 in Paris, it is crucial to resolve the issue before the games.

The French health and safety office, ANSES, claims that the nation has long been dealing with a bedbug problem; between 2017 and 2022, more than one in ten homes were infested with the pests. According to the EPA, greater travel and the parasites’ rising insecticide resistance are both contributing factors to the surge in bedbug infestations.

Before Paris Fashion Week, which took place from September 21 to October 3, there were reports of infestations. Sky News reported on Thursday that UK visitors to France are concerned about taking bedbugs back with them. The source cited a British microbiologist who predicted that London would soon experience an insect problem on par with Paris.
