For the alleged destruction of political billboards and posters in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, four individuals have been placed in custody.
When he revealed this to reporters in Ilorin, the state police commissioner, Paul Odama, stated, “After their arrest, we hurriedly completed an investigation, charged them to court, and they were remanded even before anyone could call me.”
The police commissioner responded, “Of course there was no pressure, and nobody called me to set them free,” when asked if there had been any pressure on the situation.
He added that the suspects weren’t only members of one political party in the state but rather came from a variety of groups.
Odama was worried that different political parties were tearing down signs for rival parties as their campaigns heated up.
He said that it was an electoral crime for a political party to destroy a billboard from a rival party.
“I have directed all Divisional Police Officers, DPOs, throughout the state to deploy patrol and surveillance teams.”
He warned that anyone caught trying to damage political party billboards or signs would be arrested and charged.
Respectable people in the state were told that “election is not war” and that they should follow the rules of the election process in their campaigns.
