Four members of the Edo State House of Assembly have formally switched their allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defections confirmed on Wednesday contribute to the increasing political changes within the state.
The lawmakers—Hon. Donald Okugbe (Akoko Edo Constituency II), Hon. Bright Iyamu (Orhionmwon South Constituency II), Hon. Richard Edosa (Oredo West Constituency), and Hon. Sunday Ojezele (Esan South East)—arrived at the APC Secretariat in Benin on Wednesday, where they were welcomed by the APC State Working Committee under the leadership of acting state chairman Jarret Tenebe.
As a result of this development, the APC now holds 13 seats in the House, while the Peoples Democratic Party has 11. The Labour Party’s sole representative switched allegiance to join the APC.
Edosa, representing the defectors, characterized this decision as a pivotal moment in their journey.
He explained that internal conflicts within their former parties, spanning from the national level to state and local governments, led to their decision to depart.
He stated, “A house divided against itself cannot stand. We support Governor Monday Okpebholo’s vision and are committed to assisting him in achieving his goals for Edo State. We pledge our cooperation with the governor.”
to develop both the party and the state.
Tenebe also commented, highlighting the lawmakers’ defection as a pivotal event for the ruling APC in Edo.
He assured them that the party would provide them with identical rights and privileges as other members.
He stated that these esteemed members, who offer a wealth of experience and diverse viewpoints, have acknowledged that the APC provides the most promising future for Edo State and Nigeria. They recognize the clarity in the party’s policies, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s integrity as a leader, and his steadfast commitment to enhancing life for the people of Edo.
We recognize that switching political allegiance is a significant decision, one not made lightly. It demands courage, conviction, and a hopeful vision for the future. We applaud these Honourable Members for their bravery and readiness to stand with us as we partner with Governor Okpebholo in our efforts to build a stronger economy, enhance education, foster social harmony, and ensure the security of Edo residents’ lives.
This is not just about boosting our numbers; it’s about reinforcing our shared commitment. It’s about bringing together individuals with a common goal and passion for making a meaningful impact. We appreciate the contributions of each member, and we’re certain that our new Honourable Members will be crucial to achieving success on this journey.
Earlier, the acting APC chairman, Jarret Tenebe, handed out brooms—the symbol of the party—to each of the newly appointed APC lawmakers.
