Four accused oil thieves have been detained, according to the Nigerian Navy, who have been identified as Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited personnel. They were allegedly carrying out an operation in the Lekki neighbourhood of Lagos State.

According to a statement sent to Channels Television on Thursday, the Navy stationed at Forward Operation Base (FOB) stopped an attempt to steal oil that took place in the early hours of Tuesday on the waterways close to the Itolu town.
The statement said that after neighbourhood youngsters reported hearing gunshots close to the community, naval patrol teams launched a rapid response operation.
The four people were trying to retrieve a disassembled outboard engine from a local when they were encountered by the naval crew, according to the Navy. They were wearing black polo shirts with the word TANTITA written on the back.
“The crew captured the 4 Tantita Employees and retrieved the engine. The Patrol Team only became aware of the 4 people’s involvement in the movement of a large wooden boat and 2 fibre boats after this arrest.
The two fibre boats carrying the 11 x 1000L Geepee tanks filled with what is believed to be stolen crude oil were abandoned by the huge wooden boat that the four arrested people were riding on when they attempted to approach the NN patrol teams.
Asonja Goddey (age 28), Obajimi Oluwaseyifunmi (age 38), Awoowo Aribo (age 35), and Oluwadaisi Balogun (age 40) were named as the arrested people. They are all reportedly natives of Igbokoda in Ondo State.

According to the statement, “The Nigerian Navy has launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the possession of firearms used in the community, economic sabotage, how the product was transported from Ondo State to Lagos State, as well as the attempt to steal a boat engine from the locals.”
“One Mr. Owoyele Omotuyi, who was recognised as a Tantita employee, arrived to gain the release of the four people who had been detained, stating they were Tantita workers. All suspects will be turned over to the proper authorities, together with any confiscated evidence, for any additional necessary action and possible prosecution.
