A former two-term senator who represented Ebonyi Central Senatorial district from 2015 to 2023, Obinna Ogba, has made a significant move by defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state.

This decision marks a shift in political allegiance for Ogba, who was previously associated with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and even contested for the governorship under their banner in the 2023 election.

The senator’s defection was not a solitary act, as he was accompanied by over 5,000 loyalists from across the thirteen local government areas of the state. This mass defection underscores the impact of Ogba’s decision and signals a potential shift in the political landscape of the region.

The timing of this defection is noteworthy, coming shortly after another former PDP aspirant, Obinna Nwachukwu, also joined the APC with his own group of 2,000 loyalists. The convergence of these political figures and their supporters highlights the changing dynamics within the state’s political sphere.

During the event held at Ezillo, the headquarters of Ishielu local government, Senator Ogba praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for his inclusive governance approach that prioritizes the welfare of the people. This acknowledgment of the governor’s efforts reflects a spirit of unity and collaboration across party lines.

The leaders of the APC, including Dr. Obinna Nwachukwu and APC Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, emphasized the importance of fostering a political environment free from discord and division. They attributed the wave of defections to Governor Nwifuru’s effective leadership and the recognition that unity is essential for progress and development.

Chief Emegha highlighted the significance of embracing political opponents and extending a hand of cooperation, emphasizing that the ultimate goal of politics is to serve the people. By welcoming former PDP members into the APC fold, the party aims to build a stronger and more inclusive political community that prioritizes the well-being of all citizens.
