Aminu Ado Bayero, the ousted Emir of Kano, is a private citizen like everyone else, according to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf’s statement on Wednesday.

Through Sanusi Bature, his chief press secretary, Governor Yusuf made this revelation.

According to Bature, the Kano State High Court’s decisions uphold the State Assembly’s rejection of the 2019 Kano Emirate statute, which effectively turns Ado Bayero into a private individual.

Aminu Bayero was overthrown by Governor Yusuf in May, and Muhammad Sanusi was reinstated as the 15th Emir of Kano.

The Kano State House of Assembly overturned the 2019 law and enacted the 2024 Kano Emirate law, which is when the governor made his decision.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Bature asserted that, notwithstanding judgements from other courts, the court’s verdicts uphold Sanusi’s position as the Emir of Kano.

“The court has reaffirmed the decision of the Kano State Assembly,” claims Bature. Ado Bayero is now a regular citizen, and the events that transpired were caused by the 2024 ordinance that was revoked and declared unconstitutional, nullifying the 2019 laws that separated the Kano Emirate into five.

“The State Assembly acted in accordance with its constitutional mandate when it chose to abolish the statute, which is lawful even if the Emir was not restored. By default, we are back to the pre-2019 situation in which there was only one Emir of a united Kano State, Emir Sanusi.

“According to the court’s ruling, the Speaker of the State Assembly conveyed measures made under the repealed statute to the governor, who agreed and declared Emir Sanusi’s restoration. On May 23, 2024, around 5:10 PM, this happened.

“We filed an interlocutory appeal, which the judge approved, for this reason. In light of this, Emir Sanusi stays in the palace and carries out all of his duties as the Emir of a single, undivided Kano while we wait for decisions from other courts.

“The deposition of the former Emir Ado Bayero is confirmed by the High Court’s declaration of the law’s validity, and he continues to be a private citizen just like every other Kano resident. He ought not to be spotted on any federal land. He has been residing in that government-owned, mud house—which is flawed—for more than a month.
