Former Head of State Gowon is honoured by President Tinubu at age 89
On behalf of the Nigerian government and people, President Bola Tinubu offered warm birthday wishes to retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, a former head of state, on his 89th birthday.
According to a statement by the president’s spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, the elder statesman is honoured by the president for his visionary leadership in shaping significant turning points in Nigerian history.
The president praised Gowon for institutionalising the peace process in Nigeria and leaving behind enduring legacy, such as establishing the states that would later become the federation of Nigeria.
The president noted that the former head of state also established the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which he credited with strengthening cohesion and promoting interethnic friendliness and understanding.

With the National Prayer Movement, which continues to promote neighbourliness and patriotism, Gowon, according to Tinubu, also upheld the foundations of unity among Nigerians.
“His love and enthusiasm for Nigeria, as well as his commitment to see the special talents and unified forces of all Nigerians, regardless of faith, ethnicity, or any other distinction, continue to be a leading characteristic of leadership.
The President declared, “This is what (all current and future Nigerian leaders must emulate.
Despite becoming the youngest leader in Nigeria at the age of 32, Gowon was still staunch and relevant at the age of 89, according to Tinubu, because of the courage, passion, and wisdom he continuously displayed in his youth.
He praised Gowon for his advice to both domestic and foreign leaders, noting that doing so has allowed him to continue to experience the fullness of God’s tremendous gift in his ongoing vigour and health.
The previous Head of State’s wife, his family, and a large number of friends all participated in the celebration along with the president.(NAN)
