First lady praises D’Tigress on winning the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket
Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, has praised the women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, for winning the 2023 AfroBasket tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.
The first lady, who planned a reception for the team on Monday in Abuja, expressed her happiness over the win and praised the group for its devotion, togetherness, and hard work.
She praised the team for displaying the abilities and sportsmanship that led to their triumph and enhanced the pride of the country in them.
“Your outstanding commitment, tireless teamwork, and steadfast commitment have once again made our country proud and honourable. Your performance on the court is evidence of your excellence, discipline, and hard work.
“You demonstrated your abilities and provided inspiration for young female athletes all around Nigeria. Your success went beyond the court; it motivated numerous people, particularly women, to work hard and persistently towards their goals.
“The collective efforts, unity, and synergy you displayed during the tournament exemplify the qualities that we need to make our nation strong again,” she remarked.
The first lady urged the squad to continue making the country proud and urged other women to aspire to the team’s admirable traits.
“Your success went beyond sports, representing the potential that can be realised when a diverse collection of people come together to work towards a shared objective.
“I am incredibly proud of your accomplishment and the favourable impression you have given of our nation.
She remarked that “your success confirms that Nigerian women are capable of attaining the highest level in any endeavour.”

Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, thanked the first lady for her display of affection and support while reiterating that the team would continue to give it their all.
“The senior officials were able to put together a strong team, and they worked miracles in Kigai. Therefore, it is now time for us to start over and prepare for upcoming difficulties.
“I want to reassure you that they will equally perform more wonders with this formidable team and with everything in place,” said Abubakar.
Amy Okonkwo, the squad captain, declared that the group was prepared for upcoming difficulties and will consistently bring the trophy home.
“I’m grateful for this chance and the gifts; thank you for inviting us in and showing us off. For us, this is just the beginning.
“What we are able to do in the AfroBasket gets us a big good sign, we can grow a lot from here and get ready for the world cup and the Olympics next summer,” Okonkwo added.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the reigning champions D’Tigress won their fourth consecutive championship on Saturday after defeating their Senegalese opponents 84–74. (NAN)
