Duane “Keefe-D” Davis, a self-described gangster, made his initial court appearance on a murder allegation on Wednesday. Davis is accused of planning the 1996 Las Vegas shooting killing of Tupac Shakur, according to police and prosecutors.
The session was cut short as Davis asked the Clark County District Judge, Tierra Jones, to postpone the hearing while he retained representation in Las Vegas, according to the Associated Press. Davis was set to be arraigned on Wednesday while dressed in a dark-blue jail uniform and fake orange slippers.
A grand jury indictment accusing him of murder was unsealed in Clark County District Court following his arrest last Friday. Grand jury also decided to increase sentences for using a dangerous weapon and allegedly engaging in gang activity.
Davis, a longtime suspect in the case, publicly confirmed his involvement in the slaying in interviews prior to the release of his tell-all memoir in 2019. According to police and prosecutors, his remarks reopened the police investigation that resulted in the indictment.
Shakur’s murder, according to the prosecution, was motivated by a power struggle within the musical subgenre known as “gangsta rap.”
