Fire Ravages Lagos Market, Millions of Naira Worth of Goods Destroyed

A massive fire has engulfed a Lagos market, destroying goods worth millions of naira. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze as traders count their losses.

A catastrophic fire broke out at the Idumota underbridge market in Lagos’s Ebute Ero area, causing destruction to goods worth hundreds of millions of naira.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) verified the incident in a statement released on Saturday. The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, shared information regarding the fire that broke out late Friday night.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “After receiving distress calls through the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency numbers at 10:20 PM, LASEMA dispatched its emergency response teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.”

Emergency responders reached the scene at 10:55 p.m. to discover several buildings, mainly housing car spare parts shops, consumed by flames. Although the exact cause of the fire is still undetermined, there were no reported casualties or injuries.

He added that the fire destroyed properties and goods valued at hundreds of millions of naira.

LASEMA worked alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, and law enforcement agencies to control the fire and stop it from spreading to nearby buildings.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “The law enforcement agencies at the scene implemented crowd control measures to ensure comprehensive safety.”
