In a perhaps drama-filled supplemental election in Adamawa State on Tuesday, the governor was declared the victor.
In Abuja, the certificates of return were given to Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, the Deputy Governor-elect, and Governor-elect Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State.
The certificates were given to the freshly re-elected governor and his new deputy by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at its national headquarters on Wednesday about 5 o’clock.
In a perhaps drama-filled extra election in Adamawa State on Tuesday, Fintiri was declared the victor.
A Certificate of Return has been given by the Independent National Electoral Commission to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta
In the rerun election held on last Saturday, Senator Aishatu “Binani” Dahiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came in second with 6,513 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDPFintiri )’s won with 9,337 votes.
By collecting 430,861 votes overall, Fintiri defeated Binani, who received 398,738 votes, to win the election.
Political intrigue, though, came before the announcement.
An additional vote was planned for last Saturday after INEC pronounced the gubernatorial election from earlier this month inconclusive.
Although collation was still in progress on Sunday, the state’s resident electoral commissioner (REC), Hudu Yunusa Ari, prematurely pronounced Binani the victor, in violation of the Election Act.
Ari made the announcement, and the APC candidate immediately gave an acceptance speech.
Binani was proclaimed the “winner” of the gubernatorial race, and INEC quickly responded by saying the announcement had no bearing.
