It is highly likely that Nigeria will not participate in the 2026 World Cup. The last time the Super Eagles competed in the tournament was in 2018. Unfortunately, they were absent in the 2022 edition held in Qatar. Their absence was a result of a two-legged play-off against their fierce rivals, Ghana, which ended in a goalless draw in the first leg and a 1-1 draw in the second leg.

The journey to qualify for the upcoming World Cup in Mexico, USA, and Canada did not start off well for Nigeria. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Lesotho in their Group C opener and had to come from behind to secure another draw against Zimbabwe in their second match.

Before their clash with South Africa in Uyo, there were changes in the coaching staff, with Jose Peseiro leaving his role as head coach and being replaced by Finidi George. Finidi’s starting lineup for the match included Paul Onuachu, Ademola Lookman, and Kelechi Iheanacho in the attack, with Alex Iwobi playing behind them. Victor Boniface was expected to lead the attack in Victor Osimhen’s absence, but he was left on the bench along with Terem Moffi and Samuel Chukwueze.

During the match, Themba Zwane managed to score the opening goal by skillfully maneuvering through Nigeria’s defense. Although Fisayo Dele-Bashiru equalized with his first international goal, Nigeria was unable to make a comeback.

Despite the result, Clinton McDubus, a prominent football analyst and podcaster, believes that Finidi’s performance as the new coach was decent, considering the limited time he had with the team. McDubus acknowledged that there were some mistakes, such as Onuachu’s ineffective contribution, but also highlighted the delightful interplay, particularly involving Iwobi, which could have resulted in more goals if the finishing had been better. McDubus sees the overall performance as a positive one that can be built upon.

Unfortunately, the three consecutive 1-1 draws have placed the Super Eagles in fifth position in Group C.
