The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on Organised Labour to agree on a national minimum wage that does not pose a threat to the national economy and result in widespread job losses.
Idris made this plea during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Synod of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday. He stressed the importance of establishing a wage system that is both realistic and sustainable, taking into account the needs of workers as well as the economic situation of the country.
While acknowledging the government’s commitment to reviewing the minimum wage, Idris cautioned against making demands that could have negative consequences for the economy.
The Minister also highlighted the government’s initiatives aimed at reducing the cost of living and increasing the purchasing power of Nigerians, such as the Presidential CNG initiative, which aims to cut transportation costs by 50 percent.
He stated, “The Federal Government is not against increasing wages for Nigerian workers. However, we advocate for a wage system that is realistic and sustainable, one that does not undermine the economy, result in mass layoffs, and jeopardize the welfare of the approximately 200 million Nigerians.”
Idris emphasized that the relief Nigerians are anticipating, and rightfully deserve, will not solely come in the form of wage increases.
Efforts to reduce the cost of living and keep more money in the pockets of Nigerians are underway. The Presidential CNG initiative is one such program that aims to achieve this. By replacing or supplementing gasoline usage with CNG, transportation costs can be reduced by up to 50 percent.
The Minister also called upon the clergy to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria’s renaissance and to pray for wisdom and guidance during these challenging times. Throughout history, the Church has been a steadfast partner to the government, advocating for social causes, providing essential services like hospitals and schools, and instilling values in citizens.
Despite the temporary hardships, the President is actively working to implement relief and palliative measures for the benefit of all Nigerians. The clergy, as respected religious leaders and influential voices, are urged to provide support, advice, and feedback to the government. It is crucial for them to be aware of the ongoing efforts and challenges so that they can effectively communicate them to their congregations and the general public.
Idris emphasized that the President is diligently working towards sustainable development across the country. He acknowledged the President’s courage and responsibility in implementing crucial reforms aimed at restoring growth, prosperity, and sustainable development. President Tinubu has always been honest about the challenges faced by the nation, as highlighted in his recent Democracy Day address.
