FG Unveils ‘Power Rangers’ Task Force to Combat Electricity Asset Vandalism – Minister

The Federal Government is set to establish a special task force, dubbed ‘Power Rangers,’ to tackle the rising cases of electricity asset vandalism across Nigeria, according to the Minister of Power.
Nigeria has announced plans to establish a dedicated security team focused on safeguarding its power installations and infrastructure.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced on Friday during an appearance on Sunrise Daily that they have collaborated with the Minister of Power to establish a team known as the “power rangers.”
A team known as the ‘Power Rangers’ will be formed with officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to prevent vandalism of power infrastructure, which has led to widespread blackouts throughout the country.
In response to increasing incidents of vandals damaging power installations and the public’s frustration over frequent blackouts, occasionally due to such attacks, the minister emphasized the urgent need for a distinctive solution to this issue.
He explained that the decision to establish the power rangers was influenced by the successes of the Mines Marshalls, which were launched by the Federal Government in March 2024 to address security challenges within the mining sector.
He said, “Before our administration under Bola Tinubu took office, national assets were generally treated the same way. However, we argued that a single solution cannot address all problems.”
“You need to evaluate every sector, including energy, water, education, and healthcare. Then establish divisions of Civil Defence under a unified framework.”
Although the decision to establish the ‘power rangers’ has been made, the minister did not specify a date for unveiling or inaugurating the unit.
Instead, he outlined certain steps being implemented to establish the unit.
“We’ve already settled on the modus operandi, and as I speak, the offices are being inspected,” he stated.
“Remember, we will have officers in all 36 states and the FCT since every state has power infrastructure. This is similar to how each one plays a role in the solid mineral sector.”
“We are currently in the process of onboarding these officers. This involves profiling them, assessing their capabilities and competence, examining their areas of specialization, and considering various factors including physical strength.”
