In order to permanently stop the recurring floods on the Abuja-Lokoja highway, according to Minister of Works David Umahi’s ministry, a flyover would be built.
The minister reportedly said this on Tuesday, one day after taking office, while on a tour to check on current construction projects on the Abuja-Lokoja road, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
Along with other directors from the ministry, the minister inspected certain construction sites while travelling with Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
The minister claims that the Abuja-Lokoja road serves as a crucial gateway connecting the southwest, south-south, and southeast regions to the Federal Capital Territory and the country’s northern region.
According to him, priority should be given to it as a result of its crucial significance to the socioeconomic well-being of the nation.
“We have seen the Koton Karfe section region that is constantly under water, and the only method to fix it is to perform a flypast over it while flying above the flood level.
The distance is around 1.6 km, which will require five flyovers multiplied by two, so it will actually work.
In order to find long-lasting answers to our difficulties, he continued, “we are going to be making a proposal and submitting it to Mr. President for his nod.”
The minister added that there would be a review and redesign of the road contracts but urged the contractors in charge of the project to utilise concrete.
He pledged to build concrete roads all around the nation, claiming that they were more enduring and could last for up to 50 years without needing any maintenance.
