Plans to terminate fuel subsidies by June of this year have been put on hold by the federal government.
On Thursday, Ahmed Zaniab, the minister of finance, budget, and national planning, provided the suggestion shortly after the National Economic Council, NEC, meeting, which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
She claimed that after lengthy discussion, the NEC, which is made up of State Governors, came to the conclusion that removing subsidies while the new administration is still attempting to establish itself as the ruling body would not be a prudent move.
She added that the committee now debating the subject of gasoline subsidies needed to be broadened to allow more input from concerned Nigerians.
She emphasized that there needs to be more interaction with groups like the Petroleum Marketers Association and the Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC.
