The Federal Government has clarified that the recent increase in electricity tariffs will only impact a small portion of consumers, specifically 1.5 million out of the total 12 million customers in the sector.

This increase in tariff applies to Band A customers, who receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity per day.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized that the remaining 10.5 million customers will continue to benefit from the government’s subsidy, which covers approximately 70% of their electricity costs.

Adelabu acknowledged the concerns raised by Nigerians regarding the removal of fuel subsidy and the rising inflation rate, but assured that the government is mindful of the people’s hardships and aims to gradually transition to a cost-reflective tariff system.

He also urged players in the power sector to ensure that consumers receive value for the amount they pay for electricity.
