By October, fifteen million households will receive cash transfers through a new plan the federal government is launching.
In an appearance on Arise TV on Monday, Betta Edu, the minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, revealed this.
The Federal Government’s attendance at the 78th United Nations General Assembly, or UNGA, and what it means for Nigerians were topics of discussion for her.
“We met with the World Bank, and very soon we’ll announce the expansion of the National Safety Net Programme, which will put money into the pockets of more than 15 million households in Nigeria.
These are real funds that people may utilise to launch enterprises and enhance their quality of life. October of next year will see this happen.
She added that in order to verify the National Social Register, the Federal Government will collaborate with state governments and local communities.
The minister said, “I’m sure you know very well that we have sent out a team and are in contact with the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) only to check the National Social Register working with the states and local communities and we are going to expand it.
According to the National Social Register, there are currently 15.7 million households, or roughly 62 million people. To determine if they still fall into that social category and require such interventions, we want to make sure they are still in that group.
The enlargement and verification of the National Social Register to include everyone in that category have been approved by the President.
