The multibillion-naira project has been formally turned over to the Federal Government by Julius Berger, the construction giant and contractor of the Second Niger Bridge.
During a brief ceremony at the bridge’s toll area, Minister of Works Dave Umahi confirmed that the contractor had repaired the vandalised areas and expressed his satisfaction with the job.
He said that any private enterprise willing to finish all the auxiliary roads, collect tolls, and recover investments is welcome to lease the bridge.
Umahi made a suggestion that plans are being made to find ways to reduce traffic at both the old and new bridges over the holiday season.
The 1.6-kilometer bridge connects the states of Anambra and Delta.
In the 1978–1979 electoral campaign, National Party of Nigeria (NPN) candidate Shehu Shagari made the first proposal for the Second Niger Bridge.
